Reader Question: What’s the difference between Private Label, Resale & Master Resale Rights Content?
In today’s post we’re going to get down to the learning side of PLR. After all, what good is PLR in your business if you don’t know what it is and how to use it?
LeaAnn Morris, owner of BehindTheScreenVA asked the following question on our Facebook page and I answered it there, but thought I’d post it over here too just in case you missed it or aren’t a part of our FB community.
What’s the difference between PLR, RR and MRR when it comes to PLR content? Is it the license, the material or just how one perceives it?
First, for those who may not know, I’m going to break down what each of the abbreviations means.
- PLR – Private Label Rights
- RR – Resale Rights
- MRR – Master Resale Rights
Now that we’ve got that part out of the way and you’re thinking…“Well that doesn’t help a whole heap Arika, except now I know what the letters stand for!” ;o) I’ll give you a general overview of each of these types of rights, plus one other form.
Before we get started though I want you to remember these are not all inclusive rules, basics. It’s extremely important that you understand most PLR content you’ll find comes with it’s own specific rules.
The original author has the right to put any rules they want on the content and that means they can add or remove parts of the PLR, MRR, RR rights as they choose.
A good PLR provider will not only put the rules of using their content on their website, but will also include a document that should tell you exactly what you can and cannot do with it. Remember this…if you’re ever in doubt, ASK! Don’t be afraid to email the person you bought the content from and ask for clarification. There can be legal ramifications if you use the content in a way you were not given the rights to.
Now onto the basic rules of 4 types of PLR Content…
PLR (Private Label Rights)
Basic rules: You’re allowed to change the content, including rewriting, adding your name to it therefore claiming ownership (this is different from copyright), add graphics, your voice, edit it to add or remove content, and you can use the original content for your own personal use or you can take what you’ve created from the original content and use it for your own personal profit (meaning you can take it and create products with it, monetize it with affiliate links, etc.)
Here’s what you can NOT do with PLR Content:
- Claim copyright
- Pass the PLR rights to other people.
RR (Resale Rights)
Basic Rules: You can resale the content as-is for your own profit.
What You Can NOT do with Resale Rights Content:
- Make changes to it.
- Pass Private Label Rights or Resale Rights on to anyone else. In other words, you can’t sell it and give those who purchase it RR or PLR rights – they can only use it for their personal use.
- Claim copyright.
Examples of Resale Rights
Full products that have already been created and the owner allows you to sell it on your own site and keep all the money from those sales you generate. Most will not allow you to put your name on it and therefore they are still shown as the owner/creator on all material including the product itself, sales pages, etc.
MRR (Master Resale Rights)
Basic Rules: You can resell the content as-is for profit just like RR content. You can give those who purchase the content from you RR or MRR (depending on the original owner’s rules).
What You Can NOT do with Resale Rights Content:
- Make changes to it.
- Allow your customers to make changes to it.
- Claim copyright.
Unrestricted (a.k.a. Unlimited) PLR
This is the additional one I mentioned earlier. This type of PLR content is exactly what it’s name implies and has no restrictions. This type of PLR allows you to do whatever you want with the content. You can change it, sell it, put your name on it, and/or pass PLR, RR, MRR or even the original Unrestricted Rights to others. Be careful with this one though because even though it may say the content is unrestricted or unlimited the owner may very well put some restrictions on what you can/can’t do with it. This is definitely a type of PLR you’ll want to research the rules for so be sure to check specifics.
Still Have Questions or Need More Clarity?
I hope this post has helped clear up some of the confusing terms, made it easier for you to choose which type of PLR you need, and maybe even sparked a few ideas for how to use it once you’ve bought it. If you have any questions, or still need clarification let me know in the comments section and I’ll be sure to help you get it all straight. Don’t be shy either…you would be surprised at the amount of people who get confused about the different types of right…even I had trouble for awhile keeping it straight.
Have a great weekend and God Bless!
